What CEREC can Mean to You

Have you heard of CEREC?  CEREC is an exciting new technology that has changed the way people think of dental crowns.  You do not need to think back too far to remember the days that having a crown fitted was a long, time consuming process.  The biggest part of the process was having the crown made by hand.  Crafting a dental crown was a time consuming process that required a highly skilled dental technician.  Your dentist would take precise measurements and pass them on to a dental technician who would make your crown by hand.  The trouble was that this often took quite a lot of time.  Obviously, you would have to have an appointment to take the necessary measurements.  At that time, a temporary crown was usually fitted.  You would then need to return to your dentist once the permanent crown was complete, have the temporary crown removed and have the permanent crown fitted.  That all required a lot of time and a dental procedure that is now unnecessary.

With CEREC, there are no temporary crowns, there is no waiting for a dental technician and there is no second visit.  Your crown can be designed, cut and fitted in a single sitting.  CEREC is a relatively new high-tech system that allows crowns to be computer designed and created in minutes instead of days.  If your dentist has decided that you need a crown, he or she will take a number of three dimensional photographs of the space that needs to be covered by the crown.  The crown will then be designed on a computer and cut from a ceramic block using a special computer controlled cutting machine.  In a very short time, an extremely precise ceramic crown will be produced.  Then all the dentist needs to do is fit it.

Here at Wayzata Dental, we are proud to offer CEREC services to our patients.  If you have any questions about CEREC or about crowns, please do not hesitate to ask.
