Frequently Asked Questions about Teeth Whitening

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening, Zoom

Why do teeth get stained?

Think white linen. Then think a cup of coffee spilling on it. What do you get? A stubborn stain! Now, think pearly white teeth – your teeth. Then think a cup of coffee or something similar. What do you get? A more stubborn stain. If that does no make it clear, let me tell you, the enamel of the teeth has pores that let stain make home on the surface. There are many things that may cause your teeth to discolor. Let’s look at some external factors:

  • Drinking caffeine-based beverages like tea or coffee

  • Eating chocolate
  • Smoking
  • Certain medication
  • Drinking red wine
  • Drinking cola

Apart from these superficial factors, there could be other internal factors causing your teeth to discolor. It may be difficult tracing such factors. Visit your dentist to understand the cause of the stain on your teeth.

What do stained teeth indicate?

Stained teeth may also mean that you have tooth decay; the decay causes parts of your teeth to become brown in color. Apart from this, teeth discoloration without an apparent reason may indicate that the teeth have been damaged because of some injury. Visit your dentist to know if the stain on your teeth is indicative of a deeper problem.

How effective are over-the-counter whitening treatments?

Over-the-counter whiteners and whitening treatments may work well for stains caused by external factors, though temporarily. They are effective in removing the stain only from the outermost layer of your teeth. Your best bet would be consult a dentist before trying any kind of whitening treatments; your teeth may be sensitive to the composition of such products.

How can the dentist help me?

Apart from the conventional scaling and bleaching, today dentists are equipped with advanced technology solutions. An example of such advancement is Zoom whitening. The Zoom whitening procedure can be performed in a matter of minutes, sparing you the agony of discomfort and pain.

What comprises cosmetic dentistry? (1)

If you thought cosmetic dentistry applied to fixing teeth when broken or badly damaged, you are in for a surprise. Cosmetic dentistry does not limit itself to correcting shapes and making false teeth. Simple dental treatments like whitening also fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry. In today’s post, we will glance through some cosmetic dentistry treatments.

Zoom Whitening

With technological advancements, the whitening process has become faster and less cumbersome. Zoom whitening is a process that whitens your teeth in less than an hour! This kind of whitening must be done by a professional. If you would like to make your teeth a shade lighter, fix an appointment with your dentist. If you are wondering if there are any harmful side effects, let me tell you there aren’t any major. Sensitive teeth may feel a temporary itchy or stinging sensation during the procedure. You may, however, avoid taking a chance by using anti-sensitive toothpaste before you undergo the whitening treatment. Ask your dentist to prescribe you the toothpaste.

Veneers

Veneers are part of a restorative treatment in which a thin layer of material is used to cover your tooth in order to prevent further damage to it. Veneers are also used for cosmetic purposes only; they help improve the look of your teeth. Veneers are of many kinds, the two most popular being porcelain veneers and prep-less veneers like Durathin and Lumineers. If you would like to change the appearance of your teeth, visit your dentist today.

Bonding

Bonding is usually done to hide spots and stains, cover any chip in the teeth or fill a gap. It involves applying an enamel-like material to the teeth and fixing it to make it a part of the teeth. Visit your dentist for advice on bonding.

We will continue with our discussion on cosmetic dentistry tomorrow.

Zoom - the Fastest Way to a Whiter Smile

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Zoom

While a lot of people will tell you that there’s no such thing as a quick fix. Fortunately, when it comes to getting a whiter smile, there is a faster way of getting the results that you’re looking for - a method so fast it’s called Zoom.

Rather than taking a number of hours and using trays and bleach to get results, Zoom whitening typically takes less than two hours in your dentist’s office.

Zoom is a great way to getting the whiter smile that you’re looking for - especially if you’re someone who doesn’t like to wait for results - but that doesn’t mean that it’s right for everyone. Just as it’s a great plan to talk with your dentist about the results you’re looking for, it’s also a good idea to ask about the alternatives.

You might find that other systems could be just as effective or that other procedures fit into your budget a bit more comfortably. You might find out that there’s a better way of whitening your teeth depending on what stains them - coffee or smoking. You’ll also want to talk with your dentist so that you can learn more about follow-up procedures (when and how, for example, to use the bleaching trays that you’re sent home with).

Zoom is quick and easy - but you’ll want to set up an appointment to talk with your dentist to find out if it’s right for you.

Take Back Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

Pearly whites that are not so white, damaged or misshapen teeth, chipped teeth, missing teeth, these are not problems that you have to live with. Cosmetic dentistry can fix them and it is probably easier, less painful and less time consuming than you imagined.

One relatively minor problem that can have major consequences for our self esteem is teeth discoloration. Teeth discolor naturally with age, as a result of the food and drinks that we consume and from smoking. Whitening is a very simple cosmetic dentistry procedure that can be performed to great effect right here at Wayzata Dental. In a single sitting you can have teeth that are on average eight shades whiter, thanks to Zoom.

For bigger problems we have other solutions. If you teeth are misaligned, chipped, misshapen, crooked or very severely discolored, we are able to cover them with veneers. Veneers are custom made and custom fitted facades for your teeth. They fit like a cap and are indistinguishable from your real teeth. They require only a small amount of enamel to be removed so that they fit flush with the gum line. Fitting veneers is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that has restored confidence to countless dental patients around the world.

Dental implants can solve the problem of missing teeth. A titanium screw is implanted in the jaw and a false tooth is attached to the screw. Implants are the best way to permanently attach a false tooth. The tooth need not be removed for cleaning, you can brush it as you would your normal teeth. This is one of the more involved and costly cosmetic dentistry procedures, but the results are very impressive.

For more information about these and other cosmetic dentistry procedures, please contact us at Wayzata Dental.

What you Can Expect from Zoom

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Zoom

By now you have probably heard of Zoom. Zoom is a teeth whitening procedure that is performed in our office here at <a href=”http://www.wayzatadental.com” target=”_blank” title=”Wayzata Dental”>Wayzata Dental</a>. It is performed in a single sitting and is extremely cost effective. It outperforms stay at home options considerably. The Zoom procedure begins with you being seated and getting comfortable. Then a retractor is used to get your lips out of the way and expose your teeth and gums. With your lips safely out of the way, your gums will be carefully coated with a protective gel. After this, your dentist can apply the whitening gel to the first section of your teeth.

Your teeth will be treated in three sections. After the Zoom gel is applied to a section, it’s action will be enhanced with a special Zoom metal halide light. After the first section is completed, the gel will be carefully removed and the next section will be prepared. After the last section is finished, your dentist will clean off the Zoom gel and remove the protective coating from your gums. He or she will then give you a mirror where you will be surprised to see your teeth much whiter than they were before. The average result of Zoom is teeth that are eight shades lighter. That is impressive by any standard.

Like any dental procedure, some people report side effects to Zoom. The side effect that some people experience is an acute sensitivity to cold. This will pass between one and three days. If you have any questions about Zoom or other whitening options, please make an appointment to see us at Wayzata Dental.

Zoom Versus Home Whitening

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening, Zoom

Teeth whitening solutions that can be used in the comfort of one’s own home have become quite popular. How do stay at home solutions compare to powerful teeth whitening solutions like Zoom? You will find out here. The better teeth whitening solutions will still require a consultation with your dentist. They are potentially dangerous if used incorrectly, but can be effective if you follow the instructions. The thing that you need to remember about whitening your teeth is that you are bleaching the enamel. The most common bleach that is used is hydrogen peroxide, the amount of hydrogen peroxide in your whitening gel will vary slightly from brand to brand, but only slightly. The whitening process takes place over a period of time, sometimes up to several weeks. Some side effects have been reported by people in the past, but they tend to be mild. The results of home whitening can be rather impressive, but only if used correctly. If you are interested in whitening your teeth this way, please make an appointment at Wayzata Dental. Your dentist will be able to inform you whether or not a stay at home solution is appropriate for you. He or she will also be able to advise you of the correct way to use your whitening gel.

Zoom is a much more powerful solution that is employed by us here at Wayzata Dental. Zoom is an extremely powerful whitening system that takes place in a single sitting. Your dentist will start by covering your gums with a protective gel. Then he or she will begin the Zoom treatment. Your dentist will treat one third of your teeth at a time. The teeth that are to be treated will be coated with the Zoom whitening gel and then left to whiten. The process is enhanced by use of a metal halide light. Once one section is finished, your dentist will remove the whitening gel from the teeth and prepare the next section. After the third section is completed, you will be able to see some rather dramatic results. Zoom is so popular because it is fast. All it takes is a single sitting, your teeth can be whitened in under two hours. The results of Zoom tend to be more impressive than home whitening solutions because a much more powerful bleach is used and because it is professionally applied.

Which should you choose, Zoom or a stay at home solution? The best choice depends on your teeth. At Wayzata Dental, your dentist will be able to give you the best advice. It might be that your teeth are white enough that a stay at home solution will achieve all that you need. If your dentist believes this is so, he or she will advise you that it is the best option. If, however, your dentist believes that the results will come from Zoom, they will tell you that as well. If you have any questions about Zoom or about other whitening solutions, do not hesitate to ask.

Getting a Whiter Smile Faster with Zoom

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening, Zoom

Zoom has proved itself to be a safe and fast way to a whiter smile for many people. The Zoom system makes use of a hydrogen peroxide based whitening gel. The gel will be applied to your teeth by your dentist. The Zoom treatment process calls for applying the gel to your teeth in three distinct sections. After application, a special metal halide light is used to enhance the action of the gel. The Zoom gel is kept on your teeth for a total of twenty minutes per section and the entire treatment is completed in one sitting.

Zoom has two distinct advantages over stay at home options. First, it is faster. Treatments that you use in the comfort of your own home are convenient, but the treatment takes place over a period of time. Secondly, Zoom is more powerful. Using powerful bleaching agents on your teeth is potentially dangerous and cannot be done safely in your own home. A dentist can, however, apply these safely and can make use of special gels to protect your gums from the whitening gel. If you would like to whiten your teeth quickly and effectively, you can make an appointment with Wayzata Dental. They have a great deal of experience with whitening treatments and with the Zoom system.
