What Leads Dental Patients to Ask About Whitening?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

Having a whiter brighter smile is so important to many people than, not only do we have rows of whitening products in pharmacies and supermarkets but also there are dozens of commercials for various whitening kits, gums and methods on TV. Chances are good that, if you’ve been in a pharmacy or you’ve watched more than a couple of hours of TV each week, you’ve seen a whitening product.

What leads dental patients to ask about whitening?

In a lot of cases, when people start to talk with a dentist about whitening they are asking about whether or not all of the over the counter products that are on the market are safe to use.

In a variety of other cases, patients are simply motivated to ask their dentists about whitening because they’ve seen that their teeth are stained. Whether it’s because of foods that they’ve eaten of it’s the result of drinking too much coffee or wine, they’re looking for a way to minimize the stains - if not to get rid of them altogether.

Whatever reason you have for looking into whitening your teeth, talking with your dentist is probably the best plan of attack - especially if you are serious about getting great results.

Whitening Your Teeth: What Should You Know?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

When it comes to whitening, there are plenty of people out there who want to believe that the only thing that they need to be thinking about is which over the counter product they should pick up when they stop by the pharmacy. The challenge is that they should be talking with their dentists.

(source)One of the best reasons to include dentists in any whitening process is they know more than the patient and can help explain the fine points and limitations of the procedure. “Some people are bleaching, but those teeth are impossible to bleach,” says Doundoulakis. Old fillings, old crowns, or decay in teeth will not take to whitening, he says.

“Partner with your dentist to discuss what you’re trying to achieve, pick his brains and get his best recommendations on what products would be best and get the right direction,” says Doundoulakis, who is director of implant prosthetics at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center.

While you just might find that when you talk with your dentist about the whitening options that are available to you that he or she does suggest trying over the counter products first, it is important to recognize that not everyone will benefit from taking matters into their own hands.

If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, why not take the time to talk with your dentist? That way, you will be able to explore all of your option - and make sure that you’re in a position to get the results that you’re looking for.

Whitening Toothpastes: Can They Help Give You the Look You Want?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

Whitening one’s smile seems to be something that becomes more important to more people each and every day. Whitening toothpastes, gums and over the counter strips all promise you results, but - when you talk with your dentist about it - you might find that they don’t really deliver.

Whitening toothpastes are, on many levels, just like traditional toothpastes. They have flouride and they help you to clean bacteria and food debris from your teeth. In addition, whitening toothpastes often include baking soda or another abrasive whitener.

While this can help to remove some surface stains, it may not be the most effective way of getting the whiter, brighter smile that you want. On the other hand, you may find that going to see your dentist to learn more about professional whitening procedures that will get you to where you want to be in far less time.

Whitening toothpastes can help, but they are not altogether likely to give you the look that you want: consider using them on a supplemental basis or for the other benefits that they provide.

Why Look Into Dental Whitening?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

There are a number of reasons why you might want to get in touch with your dentist is to talk about whitening your smile.

Dental whitening can make a big difference for a number of people - far more of a difference than most over the counter products which, at first glance, may seem to be a good idea. Whether you drink a lot of coffee and feel that your teeth are discolored, or whether you smoke or drink red wine or eat and drink other foods and beverages that can discolor your teeth, whitening can help to ensure that you’ve got the look that you feel good about.

A whiter, brighter smile can make you more confident - another great reason to look into whitening. In addition to making you feel better about yourself, a whiter smile (particularly one that’s been brightened by your dentist) can help others to form a better opinion of you - admittedly, some of this is going to come from the way that you feel about yourself.

Whether you’re looking to make a great impression or you just want to feel a bit better about yourself, dental whitening can make a bit difference. That, in and of itself is a great reason to talk to your dentist about your options - both those that take place in the office and those that can be done at home.

Whitening: Why Over the Counter Kits Aren’t the Best Option

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

When you are looking into whitening your teeth you might want to look beyond the over the counter kits that you can pick up along with toothpaste and shampoo at your local pharmacy or even grocery store.

In part, there is a risk with over the counter whitening kits that you will use them too frequently and damage the enamel on your teeth. In part, there’s a risk associated with over the counter whitening products because the amount of bleching agent contained is not always well regulated.

Therefore, when you’re looking at whitening, the best thing that you can do is to contact your dentist. Your dentist can set you up with a custom tray and whitening agent that you can use at home, or go over a number of in-office procedures that will give you the whitening results that you’re looking for.

Over the counter whitening kits aren’t going to give you the best results and they are not really going to be cost-effecitive over the long term. The best thing that you can do when you’re looking at whitening is to contact your dentist. Together you’ll be able to reach your whitening goals and create the look that you want to have.

Dental Whitening: No One Wants to Be Held Back by Their Smile

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

Why do so many patients who are unhappy with their smiles look for dental whitening procedures? The simple answer is that there are a number of benefits:

(source)Stained, yellow, dingy and unattractive teeth are noticeable. Tooth appearance can be a detriment to your success. Anyone with maligned or discolored teeth can benefit from cosmetic dentistry.

While that’s an extremely blunt way of putting it - talking of stained and unattractive teeth and saying that they won’t help you to succeed - it’s not entirely untrue. When you’re uncomfortable with your smile, when you are concerned about the stains on your teeth, it’s not so much that others will hold you back - it’s that a lack of self confidence will keep you from going after what you want.

Whitening is something that you can do on your own (at least to some extent), but more lasting results are going to come from seeing a professional and letting your dentist take control.

Why settle for a smile that’s not quite what you want it to be? Why let yourself be held back? With the wide variety of whitening procedures available, it’s easy to make changes and get ahead.

Should You Be Nervous About Whitening?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

These days, it seems that whitening is among the most common dental procedures - it’s something that patients look at both when they are discussing their options with their dentist and while they are visiting their local pharmacies thanks to all of the over the counter products that are available.

The problem is - and this is something that some people aren’t aware of - that it is possible to go overboard with whitening, particularly when you go about doing it all on your own.

For example, many of the over the counter bleaching kits can cause problems in a number of ways, most notably, bleach can burn sensitive gum tissue. Similarly, if you have weakened enamel or other issues, there can be problems such as increased hot and cold sensitivity. While some of these issues come from overusing or (in some cases) abusing the over the counter products, they are a cause for concern.

On the other hand, when you work with your dentist to discuss your whitening options, you’re likely to discover that the process is not only safer but also more effective than the over the counter, do it yourself products.

When it comes right down to it, there are some things that can be cause for concern, but when you work with your dentist, many of the elements that make you nervous can be quickly dismissed.

Whitening: Which Procedure Is Right for You?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff under Whitening

Your smile says a lot about you, and when you recognize that yours just isn’t looking as bright or healthy as it once did, it makes sense that you’re going to want to do something about it. In most cases, that’s going to mean looking into whitening and other procedures that can bring their smile back to what it once was:

(source)It’s no wonder, then, that people are flocking to dentists’ offices in searching of brighter pearly whites. Advancements in cosmetic dentistry have made it possible for people to brighten their teeth by several shades, removing stains left by coffee, tea, colas, wine, smoking and even natural discoloration that comes with age.

Treatments and costs vary, so it’s important to do your homework and have a discussion with your dentist about whether whitening — and in what form — is right for you.

For some, whitening will be best done with procedures like Zoom that are done within the dentist’s office; for others, a take-home process - custom molded trays and bleaching agents - is the recommendation that their dentist is going to give. That’s why it is so essential for patients who are looking into whitening to talk with their dentist about the options that they have.

Simply put: different patients have different needs. Those who have just had braces removed, for example, are going to have different needs for whitening and brightening their smiles than someone who is looking to have their smiles whitened after they’ve quit smoking after having the habit for a number of years. That’s why talking with your dentist is essential: he or she can look at your situation and recommend the best procedure for helping you to reach your goals.
